Just a note that this bug is still around and people still notice. It exits immediately if you try to run plain "spell -b".
$ spell -b /tmp/words
dogg
$ spell -b < /tmp/words
$ spell < /tmp/words
dogg
$ spell -b < /etc/passwd
$ spell < /etc/passwd | wc
262 262 1509
