For the first time, we have working touchscreen support on the Balloon3 using xserver-xorg-input-tslib (0.0.5-4) - as long as hal is installed.
After installing hal, xorg appears to no longer need any changes in /etc/X11/xorg.conf - indeed there does not need to be any mention of the touchscreen support at all and the touchscreen works exactly as before.
