How is it connected to the machine? Any USB hub involved? ISTR those scanners are bus-powered, so you want to connect the scanner either to the machine directly or to a *powered* USB hub. So if there is a hub involved, remove it, remove any USB device from the machine that you don't need and plug the scanner into a USB 2.0 port on the machine. If there isn't a hub involved, we'll need to investigate further.
