Thanks for your excellent bug report. I have reproduced it using current versions of the packages and have posted the bug report to the upstream bug tracking system. There isn't a great track record of having these bugs fixed, but hopefully xerces-p will eventually be brought back in sync with xerces-c and can benefit from improvements there. Also, just so you know, the libxerces27 package has been superseded by libxerces-c28 for lenny (Debian 5.0).
