Starting k3b from the kde kicker menus causes k3b to start and then crash imediately, however if I try starting it from an xterm then k3b hangs at the splash screen as the original reporter said. Starting from an xterm doesn't yield any information, useful or otherwise. I'll paste/attach an strace to a future update.
