This kind of patch would also be very useful when, like me, one sometimes boots into Debian directly and sometimes in Virtualbox with the partition in raw mode. At the moment I have trouble getting the 3D feature in Virtualbox 2.2 to work and I suspect it has something to do with conflicting nvidia drivers. Not sure which files are conflicting yet, since, so far, temporarily moving them out of the way and replacing them with mesa counterparts still results in a Xorg/Mesa DRI error.
