This really sounds like an upstream bug. I don't have any amd64 system, but many people have reported success, so this sounds like it is something particular to your libGL + video card + Google Earth itself (i.e. whatever it trying to load i965_dri).
So unless you have some other info, I don't think this is a make-googleearth-package bug, but a bug in Google Earth or something else.
