I'd like to add a vote for using alternatives. Evolution offers a bogofilter plugin but the pathname for bogofilter appears to be hard coded. Without using alternaives this effectively forces the use of the bdb version.
Surely the point of having multiple versions is to offer choice and alternatives is a good way to do that. The alternatives mechanism leaves the names of specific versions in place too so if multiple versions were installed and someone wanted to refer to a particular version so as to insure himself against the sysadmin changing the default alternative he could do that too.
