Okay, this is strange. I've fired up VirtualBox and installed a minimal Sid (you can see the output of dpkg -l |grep ^ii at [1]) and FretsOnFire works like a charm. What Python version is default on your system? 2.4? 2.5? Should be 2.5, right? Could you post a dpkg -l |grep ^ii too? I'm wondering what was missing on your system before you installed mesa-dev...
