Hey all, this problem has been bugging me for a few days now on my freshly installed notebook, and here is the fix: gnome-volume-manager is missing the "--enable-automount" ./configure option.
Adding this options and recompiling g-v-m fixes the problem for me. If you google around for a bit, you'll find that the Debian based Ubuntu distribution disables that switch by default, since nautilus supports a similar feature (if enabled) via its preferences dialog. Maybe this caused some confusion while packaging the Debian binary?
