I was bitten today by a crash while aptitude was saving its extended state info. XFS happily filled pkgstates of binary crap instead of its usual contents and then I now lost all the info about what packages were automatically installed to fulfill depends (in which I highly relied, btw). A backup everytime pkgstate is being written, at least, would be very useful and wise IMO =).
