With the workaround applied, I did 'apt-get update' and then 'apt-get
dist-upgrade', and in the list of updates was a kernel update. The
installation flashed the kernel, and after rebooting the DNS-323 after
the update finished, I undid the apt workaround and reinstalled apt
using 'apt-get install --reinstall apt' (because I was testing to see if
the execution reached the 'int main()' function by modifying the code to
make one of the programs in the '/usr/lib/apt/methods' directory print
every line number). Now, aptitude seems to work in its full glory
again.
