I have not heard from anyone else before, and Debian is shipping the same script that upstream is using. This path has been tested, I'm sure. What are the specific bugs you are seeing? I am very hesitant to mess with the schema of a table as well. I will not intend to apply this in Debian unless upstream agrees with it.
