Package: fglrx-driver Severity: normal to make a long story short: i upgraded to fglrx 9.4 only to experience a totally broken X and after starting X an unaccessible terminal, thus forcing me to shutdown via sysreq sub. further investigation showed, that 9.4 does work for HD series chips only, leaving users of Xxxx series out in the cold. the package description does not mention that nor does a warning appear while upgrading. module-assistant fails to build the kernel driver with an uninformative message (a la "couldn't build. maybe something is missing") which doesn't help to sove the issue (_what_ is missing?) but rather sets the user on the wrong track. replacing "fglrx" with "radeon" in xorg.conf doesn't work either.
solution: run dexconf to get a generic xorg.conf install xserver-xorg-vido-ati (xorg tests for "ati", not teh already installed "radeon") i think, some information of this kind has to be provided to help users falling in the same trap. -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.28 (SMP w/2 CPU cores; PREEMPT) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=de_DE.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) (ignored: LC_ALL set to en_DK.UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages fglrx-driver depends on: ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.5.26 Debian configuration management sy ii laptop-detect 0.13.7 attempt to detect a laptop ii libc6 2.9-12 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libdrm2 2.4.9-2 Userspace interface to kernel DRM ii libgcc1 1:4.4.0-4 GCC support library ii libgl1-mesa-glx [libgl1] 7.4.1-1 A free implementation of the OpenG ii libx11-6 2:1.2.1-1 X11 client-side library ii libxext6 2:1.0.4-1 X11 miscellaneous extension librar ii libxinerama1 2:1.0.3-2 X11 Xinerama extension library ii libxrandr2 2:1.3.0-2 X11 RandR extension library ii libxrender1 1:0.9.4-2 X Rendering Extension client libra ii xserver-xorg 1:7.4+1 the X.Org X server Versions of packages fglrx-driver recommends: pn fglrx-atieventsd <none> (no description available) pn fglrx-glx <none> (no description available) pn fglrx-modules | fglrx-source <none> (no description available) Versions of packages fglrx-driver suggests: pn fglrx-control <none> (no description available) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [email protected] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
