I also was using madwifi. When I try ath5k, my speed drops down to 1Mb/s. It is much higher using madwifi. I have an AR5212 wireless card which is famous for having problems with Linux drivers. I think it is premature to drop madwifi when ath5k still doesn't work as well at least on AR5212 cards.
