Renaming ~/.config/xfce4-session/xfce4-session.rc seems to have solved the hang problem. Before doing that the "save session" checkbox had no effect on the SaveOnExitsetting. Now its value changes back and forth according to the checkbox. I did run in to a problem with gdm logout which was giving an "authentication failed" message but that turned out to a pam problem. I just commented the "@include common-pamkeyring" line out of /etc/pam.d/gdm and now everything works. Yves-Alexis, thanks very much for your help.
