Short update: I cannot reproduce this bug using an emulated ARMEL environment in qemu. As distributed here:
http://people.debian.org/~aurel32/qemu/armel/ The previously posted snippet compiles fine under lenny and sid. I could not compile it within a working day on a real ARM machine (NSLU), and therefore went for the emulation with 256 MB RAM. Next step is to see whether the bug shows up while compiling the full package -- let's see how long that takes. Alternatively, if anyone has access to a more powerful ARM machine, I'd be very grateful for a test run!
