I have done some more testing using a different DE (lxde) and the dropdown
menus work
properly. I have come back to KDE and tried to disable composite and the other
effects but
the bug is still reproducible, if kwin is replaced with openbox or compiz, the
bug
disappears. This bug should be assigned to KDE/kwin.
