This is believed to be a bug in cups.

More accurately: this is multiple bugs spread across ghostscript and 
cups, but the main one is that cups should change its dependencies - but 
since the ghostscript breakage was requested by the cups package 
maintainer, and since the bug affects only post-Lenny releases of cups, 
I see no reason to track the ghostscript bug.
