if you don't mind me asking: Does amixer -c pcsp -q set Master 0% mute succeed while running a 'none pcsp' kernel ? If not it would be *very* curious if /etc/init.d/alsa-utils reset does not fail. It would be even more curious if the above amixer command succeeded on an non-existant card. For the same failure to affect the normal /etc/init.d/alsa-utils start you need to remove /var/lib/alsa/asound.state (as someone experiences who first installs the package. I suppose the same would happen with broken or outdate state file). Everything hinges on the line /etc/init.d/alsa-utils:175 mute_and_zero_levels_on_card "pcsp" which was not always present, but at least in the most recent alsa-utils packages is.
