Well, I *am* using the one from Debian's stable distribution. :-)
The new one, 1.9.x, has been mostly rewritten and should work a lot better. You should give it a try and see if the problems persist.
Haven't tried if it's possible to build on stable, I'll see if I have the time. In the meanwhile, I'll keep my locally patched version.
