Where the solution of depending on default-mta instead of 
(exim4|postfix|...) is discussed.

Please note that the Debian policy manual (section 7.5 [2]) says:

"If you want to specify which of a set of real packages should be the
default to satisfy a particular dependency on a virtual package, you
should list the real package as an alternative before the virtual one."

default-mta isn't a set of packages, so it's not at all relevant.
