I think we could remedy some of the --exec short-comings
by adding --no-exec. For example (in 2.2.x terms):

% cat >> ~/.cliverc
--exec="gmplayer %i;"

% clive URL
(extract, invoke exec from config)

% clive URL --no-exec
(extract, ignore --exec in config)
