You say "wide", Richard said that top and bottom are the problem.
Which is it? Maybe different fonts get different results?

It looks like the menus default to a Helvetica font, so this does not
seem to be the problem. Could check whether you have
    -*-helvetica-medium-r-normal-*-*-120-*-*-*-iso8859-1
on your system?

Could you post a screenshot somewhere?
