Thanks for this invalid info and for having let me loose time chasing a wild goose: I could actually reproduce your "problem". As I said, its mplayer related, setting the .mplayer/config file with the options you provided (they are mplayer options) will cause mplayer to not start; gnome-mplayer starts fine and then waits endlessly for the mplayer process to be spawned.
