Whoo, hoo! That was the definitive test.
Replacing libfreetype6 with 2.1.7-2.4 on debian sid
makes the problem disappear.
Time to reassign the bug to libfreetype6.
The Debian changelog isn't any help, I guess it's time
for a binary search through all the changes to find the
origin of this behavior.
