Using opengl vlc's UI became translucent but the video didn't.  The
video did stay visible, though.  That's half working as I'd expect but
at least I was still able to see the video.

glx had the same problem I initially encountered.

If it matters, I'm using the the radeon video driver with a ATI
Technologies Inc M22 [Mobility Radeon X300] video card.
