I am using awesome. I am pretty sure that this is due to awesome and
similar window managers, which do some XDG stuff "right". Thus, AWT
doesn't work properly anymore.

Can you reproduce with awesome? If you want, I can tell you exactly
what to do, since awesome isn't easy to use first time.
