aptitude 0.4.11.11-1~lenny1 (and probably other versions) has the same problem when it notices a GPG error, e.g. "There is no public key available for the following key IDs: 0x..."
apt-get update on the same host returns 100 instead of 0. Because of this it could easily happen that the administrator misses security upgrades!
