First of all, I finally found the place to which vm had moved all my mail: It was all in $HOME/INBOX. So, after all, no data has been lost, meaning this bug probably no longer qualifies for severity "grave". However, it is still quite annoying because vm has merged mail from many different mailboxes into a single fat INBOX, even though I did not customize it to do so (there is nothing in init.el or custom.el that applies to vm).
