GNOME with Compiz as the window manager. Yes, I do:

lakeview no % ps ax |grep gnome-settings-daemon | grep -v grep
31423 ? Ssl 0:05 /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gnome-settings-daemon

Also, the keys that are listed in
/usr/share/gconf/schemas/gpointing-device-settings_gnome_settings_daemon.schemas
are properly set to those default values, but they have no effect. I
must still run gpointing-device-settings every time I log in.

I've also included this dump of /desktop/gnome/peripherals (after I have
already run gpointing-device-settings this session):

If you want one after I've logged in, but before I've run gp-d-s, I can
do that as well.
