Although this information doesn't seem to have become more usable, so it
could be that I'm doing something wrong here.
On what architecture(s) are you experiencing the problem?

I'm running this on a Intel Q6600 (4 cores) and am currently using an
i686 kernel (2.6.18-6-686-bigmem).
Do you have the mysql extension installed?
Yes:
ii php5 5.2.6.dfsg.1-1+lenny3
server-side, HTML-embedded scripting language (metapackage)
ii php5-mysql 5.2.6.dfsg.1-1+lenny3 MySQL
module for php5
Although disabling the module for the cli (by removing the
/etc/php5/cli/conf.d/mysql.ini) seems to have no effect, it still crashes.
