Ok, it makes sense. I'll commit it for dpkg 1.15.4. The cron package should not be updated before this version is available in sid. Then the code can be removed in cron and it needs to add a “Breaks: dpkg (<< 1.15.4)” to ensure that one always has the backup functionality either via cron or via dpkg.
