Your debug output shows that /opt/man/man3/AE.3.gz is a symlink to /opt/perl/man/man3/AE.3.gz, which suggests that this bug is a duplicate of #384301, fixed in 2.5.4. I don't suppose you could try man-db 2.5.5-3 in testing and see if that fixes it for you?
