I build it with
apt-get source timidity
sudo aptitude build-dep timidity
dpkg-buildpackage -B -us -uc
sudo dpkg -i ../*.deb
and it fixed the problem for me.
$ sudo aptitude safe-upgrade

Starting TiMidity++ ALSA midi emulation...No protocol specified
XOpenDisplay() failed
Home directory /etc/timidity not ours.
