this bug somehow did not make it to the maintainers mailing list.
However I just saw it during working on the kaffe package.
You are right, also kaffe itself does not depend on a c++ library
the libgmp3-dev packages with a mixed c++/c library forces us
into the c++ transition.
We currently need to wait for libgmp3-dev to be built on m68k
before we can upload. Another point is that upstream will
release a 1.1.6 release soon.
So there is the possibility that we will wait for a rebuild
until this release is out to save buildd cycles.
