Well, i think you'll be happy to know that a mldonkey 2.5.28.1 package is 
almost ready (need to work on a file splitter for users.ini, containing
password). This release will be followed by a 2.5.30.X (on the advice of
spiralvoice).

Concerning your bug : /etc/init.d/mldonkey-server, as shipped with debian 
package, doesn't use the option "-daemon"! I am very surprised that this
can be the cause of the problem... Please dig your problem a little
more, to know precisely where the error comes from. Since, you modified
the debian package, it is really hard for me to find this kind of bug...

ps: i agree on the fact that the core transition should be without
