I think #345256 was not a real bug at all, and the current state is IMO a release-critical policy violation. You're modifying a dpkg conffile with maintainer scripts, which is mentioned in the Squeeze RC policy. I'd use ucf myself, but I see there's already quite a bit of relatively heated related discussion in #410946. Oh well. I'll see if I can come up with a proposed patch at some point, but getting Perl 5.10.1 into sid is eating my time right now.
