No. The packages are marked as automatically installed once they are installed. If you now remove all packages depending on them, it is clear that they may be removed.
To solve the problem, use something like
aptitude unmarkauto ~i~R^gnome$
before executing apt-get install wicd. This will mark all
packages on which gnome depends as manually installed.
