Nevermind, it turns out I was running an old version of iceweasel. After
purging it (including manually removing some folders) and reinstalling
the gnash plugin, it's working.
Sorry to bother you.

Gnash is not supposed to handle .flv files directly, it is a .swf player
Greetings,
Miry
Whatever, it doesn't show up in Iceweasel as a plugin (about:plugins
doesn't show it). However, I do have mplayer listed as a plugin for
.flv files. Now the Adobe flashplayer handles both types of files, so
I don't know what file type Iceweasel is going for when it tells me
it's missing a plugin and goes to Adobe's site to get flashplayer.
Now I do have a few .flv files and can play them with mplayer
(although kaffeine is the default player for them), and mplayer's
plugin does show up in Iceweasel, so I think the evidence is strong
that it's the .swf capability that is missing.
Is there an extra step I need to take beyond installing the gnash
plugin? I've located several plugin directories that appear to be
related to mozilla browsers but I don't see gnash in any of them.
What's the exact plugin file name?
