Unfortunately, after applying Miguel's patch jabber-irc's postinst script fails because it expects "jabber" user to be present on the system. This functionality was provided by jabber-common's postinst script. We have fixed this in Ubuntu by moving creation of "jabber" user from jabber-common to jabber-irc. The patch is at:
