I have recently had a similar problem with a Visioneer 9450 scanner that used
the Avision backend. Xscanimage would generally work and scanimage would work,
but Xsane was hopelessly slow.
I traced through the Avision backend for the problem and came up with some
pretty simple solutions. I added a configuration flag for the Visioneer 9450.
I added "AV_NO_BUTTON".
I also had to change some other things like "AV_ADF_BGR_ORDER_INVERT",
"AV_MULTI_CALIB_CMD".
And to the get the document feeder to not hang up Xsane I had to add
"AV_NO_TUNE_SCAN_LENGTH". This is a new option.
By doing these simple things to the Visioneer 9450 configuration line I had a
fully featured functional scanner.
