FWIW, I've gotten a confirmation off the BTS from someone with the same
problem, who confirmed that it worked for him after having switched to
-alsa.

Yes, I guess there were some 2.4 backports, but mainline support has been
added to 2.6 only.

-all still includes OSS support, but you could try whether it applies to
sound systems like arts and esd as well. (they are selectable through
exporting the SDL_AUDIODRIVER environment variable).
