Yeah, that's the problem. Move all your stuff in .xinitrc to .xsession,
remove the xinitrc and retry. It /should/ fix the problem.
I verified that this problem doesn't happen if I rename .xinitrc to
.xsession and use startx. If I rename .xsession to .xinitrc, the problem
is present again.
