[I've been away from my computer / internet for several days.] The problem seems to have gone away on my system, although I haven't knowingly changed anything. If it recurs, I'll report back. [FWIW, I have roughly the same HDD layout as Armin - /boot on a tiny ext3 (primary) partition, and everything else on LVM on top of LUKS on another partition.]
