Where would there be a gsynaptics configuration that would work without 
gsynaptics installed?  xorg.conf perhaps, but a GUI for synaptics is generally 
used instead of, not in addition to, xorg.conf modification.


Regardless, Paul gave an excellent reminder; just use
 synclient TapButton1=1
for left mouse button 1-finger tap
along with, as desired:
 TapButton2=3 TapButton3=2
for middle and right mouse button, 2 & 3 finger tap respectively.

in .xsession or somewhere to enable tapping, until gpointing-device-settings 
supports setting tapButton options.
