I correct myself: 

as awesome is used by its majority of users as a tiling window manager
(although it is more powerful than that) I would expect its default mode
to remain "tile".

Most users use "tile" mode not because they are unaware of awesome's
other capabilities, but because it's a very convenient mode to work with.

Anyway, regardless of what the default mode is, an obvious and easy way
to change the default mode (without knowing the API) would make most
users (including myself) happy.
