Sorry for my late reply, you can set the owner back to Ryan. I think i am better at writing code then writing packages. Ryan, i would suggest building the package based on the head of the 1.7.2 git branch, I added some bugfixes to that branch last week that are not part of the 1.7.2 package. Don't use the master git branch, it has too many experimental/unstable features. You will probably also need to create a tolua++ package if you build conky with lua support. Cesare Tirabassi <[email protected]> can probably give you some more tips, he maintains the ubuntu package and also writes code for conky.
