If you use a net install of debian testing, and install *only* ssh and emacs, accepting all other required packages, you do not get a fully functioning emacs. Emacs will work in non-x mode, but will not display x client windows. DISPLAY is not set. To get it to work I've had to install xbase-clients, though there may be better ways. I believe emacs needs xauth (as would any x client application).
