And, of course, right after I wrote this (while fiddling with splashy/grub 
because it apparently somehow killed compositing in X), the next reboot 
fixes network-manager.  I can't remember what I did before that reboot, 
since the last change I tried that failed...

Oh well.

Now the only thing is that knetworkmanager won't start automatically anymore 
(surely session halndling should remember it was there?)
